Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet onion Vidalia or yellow onion recommended
  • 2 tablespoons butter salted or unsalted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder optional

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Wash and peel the onion, then trim the ends.
  • Hollow out the center of the onion using a melon baller or spoon to create a well, being careful not to puncture the bottom.
  • Melt the butter and mix in the salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using).
  • Pour the seasoned butter mixture into the onion well, letting it overflow slightly.
  • Wrap the onion tightly in aluminum foil, ensuring no gaps.
  • Place the wrapped onion on a baking sheet and bake for 60 minutes, or until tender when pierced with a fork.
  • Remove from the oven, unwrap, and serve warm.

Notes

  • 1- Use a firm, heavy onion without soft spots for best results.
  • 2- Experiment with additional seasonings like Cajun or smoked paprika if desired.
  • 3- Serve as a side with grilled steak or roasted chicken for a complete meal.
